Mhairi Black brands Labour rival Ian Murray a ‘bully’ in war of words over her illness

‘BULLY’ Labour MP Ian Murray blasted on Twitter for telling SNP’s Mhairi Black to ‘turn up more often’ despite her being seriously ill

The Nats politician accused her rival of ‘bullying tactics’ over the tweet. Now other Twitter users have called for Mr Murray to delete the post

LABOUR’s Ian Murray has been blasted on Twitter for telling the SNP’s Mhairi Black to “turn up more often” – despite her being ill.

Mhairi Black has branded Labour rival Ian Murray a “bully” after he complained that she missed a Westminster vote while off ill.

The bitter war of words erupted when the Edinburgh South MP took to Twitter after seeing Black’s column in the Daily Record where she accused Labour of being the architects of austerity.

Murray messaged Black in a public post on Thursday evening and slated the 23-year-old over her voting record.

He asked her: “Did you vote against the Tory budget last night @MhairiBlack? To make it easy for you the answer is no you didn’t.

“Maybe you should turn up a bit more often. Worst attendance and voting record in Parliament.”

SNP MP Neil Gray quickly entered the fray to defend his colleague and said: Ian, you do realise @MhairiBlack has been off unwell don’t you?

“I suggest you delete your tweet as this type of attack is not on.”

And Black herself soon waded in and accused Murray of behaving like a bully.

The Paisley and Renfrewshire South MP linked to an earlier article that outlined the health issues she has recently suffered from including stomach problems and the norovirus.

The MP also pointed out that she had a sick line from the doctor and couldn’t travel to her work in Westminster due to illness.

Replying to Murray, Black said: “A wee excerpt from a recent interview I did. Learn how to make a political point without resorting to bullying tactics.

Some Labour values you’ve got… You stay classy Ian.”

Some Twitter users waded in on Black’s behalf and accused Murray of using the ATOS-type tactics that benefit claimants are forced to endure under the Tories.

Chris Ward said: “When did you start working for ATOS Ian?”

Others urged the Labor MP to apologise for his comments.

Murray responded directly to Black and said: “I’m genuinely sorry you’ve been ill but I was referring to your Daily Record article where you accuse Labour of backing the Tories when the SNP didn’t vote against the Tory budget the very same day of the article.

“You and your colleagues voted on amendments less than an hour before.”

Black again fired back and said her party abstained on the third reading of the Finance Bill because it contained the changes to VAT for the police and the fire service in Scotland the SNP had been fighting for.

She added: “Sorry Ian, not good enough. Publicly chastising and blaming a person for not being able to work when ill? Sounds very like a Tory wrapped up in Labour clothing.

“You’ll see the explanation for our abstention in my reply. Disagreeing is fine but debate without bullying please.”

And she also slammed Glasgow North East Labour MP Paul Sweeney for joining in the bullying behaviour.
